Boy, she really understands this character down to the bone. If you've ever read Schiller's play, this is about as close as you can get to the true essence of Elizabeth de Valois, given what Verdi's librettists did to the original. Remarkable. Perhaps not the most beautiful vocally, but man, she nails this thing. Notice that when she knocks the rocks off at 9:02 it distracts her for about a total of one half of a second.

Definitely she is unsurpassable; not only her voice, also the different shades of passion she puts into all of her roles. For those like myself, who never had the unique chance to see her live, these videos gives us a glimpse of her mastery! Thank you so much for sharing.

@simisimi9 I see you are losing your temper and argument because everything I said is too evident in any of her videos, she is very camp artist, I feel sorry for her, but I don't feel sorry for her fans because they are the worst people in the opera, miserable, ignorant and disgusting men and as we know Callas fans are misogynist and they are the remains of a young man

@simisimi9 I saw the video objectively, without taking a party of bad faith, but God what a camp artistshe was.

She was corny and affected, making faces when the music starts. And as always a nightmare of vocal flaws , poor Maria I don't hate her, I feel sympathy towards the way she lost her voice so fast and because she died so young.

What I find fascinating about this video (other than the inherent genius at hand) is that, looking to the column of other videos on the right, I see a live clip of Callas singing Eboli. It truly says something when a singer can take on two divergent roles in the same opera and make them come alive like none other has done before. Callas never even sang Eboli on stage, but it didn't matter. Brava Brava Brava. Viva La Divina

@millriv :-) if she were any lesser soprano, who was a voice only, and not a master visionary, artist and vocal colorist, you are right. She would be criticized for her top notes. Most of us are so darned glad she was filmed at all, if even past her vocal prime. We know the history, and that at this point she did not have the top of her younger days. So we don't expect them. We look for the genius at art, that was still there, and we are grateful for it.
