Great pyranees are not very easy to train, on the whole, especially at the more advanced levels. You don't have to take my word for it, go to an AKC obedience trial and see how many are entered...likely, there will be none.

Great Pyrenees are wonderful dogs to own as long as you know what you are getting. I own a Great Pyrenees/Collie, you can't even tell he is collie. He is really smart and knows tricks but only does them when he sees it benifits him. I love it when he plays dead but he sure will be looking for a reward after. I agree with the positive reinforcement. Before getting one i think everyone needs to really do their home work because this is A LOT OF DOG. But in the end it is a wonderful dog.

My GP Murry "knows" lots of commands, but picks and chooses when he will obey. Usually there needs to be a tasty reward lol. People need to know (especially with this "Santa Paws" movie coming out) They are NOT big golden retrievers! My boy is wonderful, but he can play HARD. He's bloodied me a few times accidentally. And he NEEDS this level of play. I take him on an hour long walk 3-4x a week. Oh and the fur, and copious amounts of slobber! lol He's smart and wonderful but BE READY! lol

@residentevilmilla A pyr with dominance oriented aggression toward people is not good, and very difficult to train due to their typical aversion to training. If you have not already, you may want to consider having him trained or at least work with a skilled professional who has dealt with Pyrs that have behavioural problems.

@KGotschall i guess like anything else there are exceptions to the rule. I have a 15 week old pyre and he walks on a leash wonderfully, and already knows the commands: sit, down, off, stay and come. he will also give me a "kiss" when i ask for one and sits still when I brush him, usually done twice per day because we have alot of grass burs in our yard that always end up in his fur.

This is an interesting, informative and accurate video. I like the way you explain things. I don't take my (outdoor) Pyrs to the Groomer very often; but I always let the groomer brush out their winter coats. It is a chore and there is a massive amount of fur.

My Pyrenees used to do that with me. He grew out of it when he was 1 1/2 years old.

i need some help with my pryenees he is 11 months and he growls really bad at anyone that takes anything away from him eg the stuff in the trash. he pushes my brother downstairs and is loyal but very hard to train

Congrats on your puppy, they are fantastic dogs. Be careful about Blizzard wandering off, Pyrs have a tendency to roam, they walk away from you and just keep going, not to be bad, it's just a trait. Also, they can be very "independent", read stubborn... but she will adore you and will have a great sense of humour, and will protect you literally to the death. They are very intelligent and will do things that will blow your mind. Good Luck with Blizzard!!! Great name too!!! My Lucy says WOOF!
