"Sentimental Fool" is the third track off of Roxy Music's 5th album titled "Siren". It was written by Bryan Ferry & Andy MacKay.

Lyrics are as followed:

"Surely you cannot be leading me on?
Well if that's so, however can I love again?
How could I believe again?
How can I hold on?
Sentimental fool
Knowing that fate is cruel,
You ought to forget it.
Yes, I know it's true,
I've seen what love can do,
But I don't regret it.
Oh, you silly thing--
Don't you see what's happening?
You're better without it.
No, that's not the case--
If you were in my place,
You never would doubt it.
Sentimental fool
Who broke the golden rule,
You couldn't resist it.
Though it's all in vain,
I'd do it all again
Just to relive a minute.
A woman in love
Can make you feel good--
You know what you're living for.
She'll give you so much
And keep you in touch
With all that's worth living for.
Oh once she gets in
Through thick and through thin
She'll show you what living's for.
The rhythm of love
It must go on
Can't stop.
The beat of your heart
Is like a drum
Will it stop?"

  • Classic Roxy Music track ( and the opening song of their tour to promote the ' Siren ' album ). But let's not get carried away by this ' Eno nostalgia ' thing ........ His influence on the band ended with ' For Your Pleasure ' some years earlier :-P

  • This is a great song. I agree with the Eno comment. You said something I have wanted to say but never got aroud to saying. Eddie Jobson is on this song & Bryan Ferry was a huge part of Roxy's sound.

Little tidbit (not about siren though). Eno's fave Roxy LP was the first Roxy album without him: Stranded. My fave too!

  • @macwhites Frantic was pretty good, and Olympia has its share of moments.

Siren was pretty iffy at times. Thought not quite as silly as Manifesto.

  • Siren is a pretty ordinary, messed up album, but I do love this song.

  • The second line lyric is wrong :(

  • go eddie manzo mackay thommo and ferry.slightly vapid though.siren was not a classic.but towers over anything bryan has done in the last 3 decades. such a shame.

  • @lazyriver2 Well-spotted - very few folks pick the Greek chorus aspect to the lyrics to Sentimental Fool, one of my Roxy faves.

  • Phil Manzanera on this tune apparently resembles Robert Fripp in style and approach a lot

  • What I like about every Roxy Music album, is each one has a particular adventure to them. I love every one of them!

  • Anyone and everyone who has problems criminological can identify with the sentiments of Bryan Ferry concerning the necessity of murdering one's lost lover. A bitch, a twitch, a convenient ditch, 2 shells traversing at divergent angles provide for another woman/another chance.

  • OMFG this song still brings a lump to my throat it's that good. Timeless, classic. THE best band ever.
