On the Island of Mindanao in southern Philippines, more than half a million people fled their villages after fighting erupted once again between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in August 2008. Today thousands still remain in squalid evacuation camps out of fear and despair, hoping that peace will come. What is this conflict - which has claimed at least 120,000 lives over the past 40 years - all about? 'Mindanao: Voices for Peace' traces the historical roots of the conflict and looks at local peace building initiatives today. The voices for peace in Mindanao are strong, but these voices are seldom heard.
