Hear how CDC scientists address major outbreaks to protect public health around the world, and the latest DNA sequencing technology available to identify the deadly pathogens that cause them.

The greatest problem for people is uncertainty. Things that you can't see and you have no control over, people are invariably scared. But if we want fear not to be contagious, in the same way we don't want a disease to be contagious we have to break the transmission.

Here at CDC we serve as essentially the nerve center for public health here in the US and Worldwide during an outbreak. Your goal is to figure out what is going on and to shut down this outbreak as fast as possible for the sake of the community.

The speed and the volume of international travel, as well as globalization and the population explosion have totally changed the game on how we look at the importation and spread of disease.

CDC was founded as an anti-malaria agency; the first scientific tools were shovels and sprays. Now it's less than 72 hours you can get from one point to any point on the globe; that 72 hours is shorter than the incubation period for many of the infectious diseases.

So it's really understanding the globe, the whole world, is our place of living. The ability to do things rapidly is just unbelievable. When you look at the traditional microbiology methods: which is growing the organisms on the plate, for a day, two or three. And then to identify it. What we have now is methods that allow us to detect the genetic material in it within a couple of hours.

Ion Torrent is a new machine to decode the genome of organisms. You pull out its genetic material and you put it on a new chip. The Code of Life is spelled out in four chemicals that are abbreviated ACGT, that chip directly reads off those letters to a computer and they're assembled in the genome or instruction set for that organism.

You always have to name your enemy, and in a case of H1N1 or influenza virus by getting the full sequence you know what you're dealing with.

It's this instruction set that determines everything that organism can do and how it will behave.

And so when we see an anthrax case in the US, we really want to know what the strain looks like to say, "hmm, are you natural?" or "did somebody make you in a lab?"

I think that science, and I think that most people would agree, is truly the cornerstone of what we do. So the CDC is a repository of information. The CDC has sequenced thousands of organisms that are pathogenic. Whenever there's an outbreak they can sequence these things and compare them on a computer to things they've dealt with.

The better you are at having these capacities to diagnose things, to identify things fairly quickly, the more you can adjust them. When you don't know what is going on and you put together a group of brilliant people and they start brainstorming and figuring out what to do and how to do; that is truly contagious.

CDC is in the health protection business or the health security business; we try to make sure people are safe. And that's a 24/7 mission.

Whether it be around infectious disease or chronic diseases. Safety of their food, safety of their air, safety of their water, safety of their working environment. Whether it be preparing the country to be able to detect and respond rapidly, to recover quickly. Public health is working every day; we're on it.
