No. Diablo spirit is imprisioned in that stone and it was Lazarus (corrupted by that spirit) that stuck it into Prince Albrecht head to serve as the mortal host for Diablo.

@XerifeGuenu No, all the heroes were driven almost completly insane by the Diablo´s curruption by the time they reached him in Hell level 16. That is canon, deeper they went into the labyrinth, more of their sanity they left behind. When Aiden (Warrior) stuck Diablo´s soulstone in his head, he thought that was great idea.

I believe Diablo 2 says that the Hero of Diablo 1 was tricked into putting the stone into his head. Diablo sensed him coming and figured that he would make a much more powerful host then the Prince so he let the Hero win. The hero heard Diablo whispering in his head the entire time and by the time he killed Diablo he was quite insane and was convinced (by Diablo) that the only way to stop him was to shove the stone in his head. I believe that is what it is at least.
