Video shows a monarch butterfly emerging from its crysalis, along with still photos of the caterpillar stage. The footage of the butterfly hatching was taken with my isight camera on my Macbook pro. I used time-lapse (1 shot/10 sec) to make it appear faster. Watch the minutes tick by in the counter. And remember: Plant Milkweed!

  • was it in a cage?

  • It was in a box, the caterpillars do not leave the milkweed so they do not wonder off.

  • This video is great and the music is an added bonus. I would love to add this to my powerpoint presentation. Is this possible as long as I give you the credit. You might get more hits.

  • Sure, you have my permission to use he clip if you cite me as the source. What type of presentation is it for?

  • Thanks for all your kind words. This clip is nearly at 40K hits.

  • omg it says insects were harmed during the making of this movie!!!!

  • It says "No animals were injured in the making of this film." The text came out a little grainy.

  • One caterpillar said to the other caterpillar, while watching a butterfly, you'll never get me up in one of those things.

  • @savanah37615 The process from egg to butterfly takes about four weeks in the summer. The egg takes 7 to 10 days; the larva/caterpillar and pupa/chrysalis each take about 10 to 14 days. In autumn, winter and spring it takes a lot longer (if it happens at all). Peace, Love and Joy!

  • the music is COMPLETELY uncalled for.

  • Butterflies are amazing and very beautiful creatures. I never get tired of them flying around the garden. It relaxes me.
