Durango & Silverton Railway trip Aug 29th 2008

The City of Durango was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1879. The railroad arrived in Durango on August 5, 1881, and construction on the line to Silverton began in the fall of the same year. By July of 1882 (amazingly, only 9 months after construction began), the tracks to Silverton were completed and the train began hauling both freight and passengers.

The line was constructed to haul silver & gold ore from the San Juan Mountains, but passengers soon realized it was the view that was truly precious.

This historic train has been in continuous operation for nearly 125 years, carrying passengers behind vintage steam locomotives and rolling stock indigenous to the line.

Relive the sights and sounds of yesteryear for a spectacular journey on board the Durango
& Silverton Railway.

  • Thank you.

    I enjoyed the ride

  • Back again lol. Just wondering..I know the "canyon rim" shot is on right side...but does the train cross the river causing you to switch seats or should you remain on right side...or is it just a layed back trip and you can move about? Thanks

  • Good question, the river is crossed. I also did the return trip so got both sides as well. A great day. ps I rode a motorcycle 400 miles yesterday through similar country in BC

  • The seats on the train are assigned, but the railroad crosses the river 5 times each way, as well as the train being turned around for the return trip, so you will see everything to be seen.

  • Thank you. Just wanted to make sure you can switch seats or something. Yes Im going to return trip on train lol. And interesting. Whats the most scenic area in Canada. I honestly never have read/researched Canada.
