That is poor marshal work by the marshals at the first chicane. That's also why Roger Edmunson at AMA Pro (US) has looked at ways to avoid such start crashes -- rolling starts with "no accelerating or passing until after the line" rules and with Monza's chicane, cutting the run to the start is also feasible by moving the start line (Mid-Ohio).

A good friend of mine was on the second row of this race until some numbnuts backrower took 13 of them out and they didn't stop the race. How much does that suck?
