I have done this trip many winters in 30 to 50 foot sailboats, and it is like being in a motor home. But in a tiny sailboat camping under a boom tent you really get your ass kicked. 25 knot winds are a major problem, a cold front moving over you can be a major challenge. It makes the trip much more fun. I am doing the trip now in a Catalina 22.

Ok, the reason you hear the motor is that I had to make 4 knots an hour to do my 30 to 40 miles a day. I was trying to sail 600 or 700 miles at 4 miles an hour. If you just sail, you might make 20 or 25 miles a day. When you are cruising, as they call it, you just keep the motor idling, watch your GPS and if you drop below your target speed, give the motor just a touch of juice to keep her speed up. Also just sailing you have to tack more, which can add 25% more miles to the total trip.
