Greek Turkish shared music - the Sylivria / Silivri connection

The coastal Thracian town of Silivri (Sylivria, Selymbria) and the surrounding region was heavily populated by Greeks until the Exchange of Population. Most of these refugees ended up in Thessaloniki (Selanik) and its environs and in the Halkidiki peninsula. Syliria / Silivri and the neighboring town of Tekirdag / Redestos were well known as musical centers. Many of these refugee musicians were very active in northern Greece and several were recorded late by folklorists, especially G Melikis of the Thessaloniki Municipality and S Karras' SDNM center. Sylivria was also the hometown of an extended family of Greek musicians of Ottoman classical music - Yorgo & Aleko Bacanos, Kemenceci Anastas and his son Kemenceci Parasko and their cousin Sotiri Tsandali. The most common dances of the Sylivrian Greeks were Syrto, Karsilama and Hasapiko.
