I don't havta' call when I want my Sal,
fifteen miles on the Erie Canal.
She trots from her stall like a real good gal,
fifteen miles on the Erie Canal.

  • it was written from the perspective of a mule driver during the transtion between mule power to engine power.slave song?irish song?where do you think the erie canal is located?it's in erie Pennsylvania!it was written at the turn of the 20th century.way after slavery was banned and trust me,it's not an irish song.it has nothing to do with those things!did you listen to the song at all?did you read the lyrics?nothing to do with ireland or slavery. LAZY! just do the reseach. it's not that hard.

  • @mayonaiseanonymous i think i was trying to be funny when i put in those annotations- the erie canal passes right by my house, and it is certainly not located in erie Pennsylvania hahaha. good ol' new york state - that is where.

  • I learned this song with "15 YEARS on the Erie Canal"...

The canal was a lot longer than 15 miles....the muleskinner talks about going from Albany to Buffalo...

Makes more sense with "years" than "miles"....

  • @lonelyhashbrown oh dude, i wasnt saying anything about u! there were some weird comments made by other people here saying it was about slavery and irish stuff...and they are obviously wrong, so my comment had nothing to do with ur performance, just putting stupid people in their place! ;)

  • Most excellent. Exuberant. Worth the listen. Thanks

  • can you give me the chords?

  • Slave song? hardly, just bethinking of old canal days in 1905. Nice job on the song tho.

  • I had to learn this song back when I was in grade school. 45+ years and I still can't sing it as good as you do. Looks like you had a great time. Really liked the outro.

    Thanks for sharing it.

  • Horible!

  • Its neither a "slave song" (there is no such thing anyway) nor an Irish song. It was written by Thomas S. Allen in 1905. Nice job on it, Dan.
