when Siegal and Shuster first created Superman he didn't possess flight yet, instead his flight powers were limited to leaping an 1/8th of a mile, because of his strength. these cartoons and the on going radio show at the time were where Superman first gained the ability to fly, the studo making the cartoons said they changed leaping to flight since leaping looked silly

lot of plotholes though if it really was in a special frozen section they'd have kept it in a area with plenty of insulation to slow the temperature change and back up generators in case a situation like this ever popped up. But that's Superman for ya.
