Insurance companies are in the bussiness of calculating risk. I, my missus and my two daughters aged 9 and 11 are insured 3rd party to the value of £10m, to ride on any road here in the uk. It costs us £50 per annum. The premium reflects the likelyhood of us
a) having an accident were we are responsible
b) causing injury other than cuts and bruises
Cyclists do sometimes cause accidents but try insuring your fammily to all drive a car and you will see where most of the blame and injuries lie.

@cosine303 I did some google searching as you recommended and the latest data does not back your claim. In 2009 0 pedestrians were killed by cyclists and 426 cyclists were killed by vehicles, That just includes cyclist not the many pedestrians and other drivers. This carnage is the reason drivers need insurance. They kill more people than anything else! ( the economist;cycling in london)

@cosine303 I don't know where you get your "facts" but talk to ANYONE who is a first responder about death and injuries caused by cyclists to pedestrians and it is very rare due to the fact that a vehicle weighs several thousand pounds vs. less than 200 pounds for a typical cyclist. More people are injured by dog attacks, so should dogs be licensed? Cars probably claim as many life years as cancer due to the deaths among youth.Your argument is simply false- give us some real data! Its BS!

I think you should do some research, SADLY a few pedestrians HAVE been killed by cyclists of late.. do a bit of research and you'll find out. the ratio of cars vs bikes ? exactly.. do a goggle search for "cyclist kills pedestrian London" and yer.. you'll see. cyclists have no insurance for anyone they mame... or sadly kill. it's not so rare... count how many cyclists run red lights... you'll find that percentage is very high vs cars.
