In 2000, Jason Connelly had a malignant mole removed from his back. He visited M. D. Anderson for regular checkups, and no evidence of the cancer remained. In April 2006, his belly began to fill with fluid, so he returned to M. D. Anderson. Exploratory surgery determined that the cancer had spread in his peritoneum, or the membrane that forms the inside of his abdominal cavity.

Jason was diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic melanoma. He enrolled in a clinical trial using immunotherapy, a therapy that got its start from philanthropic funds.

Making Cancer History®: The Campaign to Transform Cancer Care will push forward efforts in immunology by looking for ways to use the bodys own defense system to fight and defend itself against cancer, much as it would a virus or bacterial infection. Philanthropy played a critical role in the development of the treatment that was used to fight Jasons cancer and will help many others in the future.
