I'm a 'period drama' dork to the EXTREME! I have a great affinity for P&P. I adore the characters, the courtship, the family... it's earthy, inspiring, emotional... though not entirely faithful to the book it excelled in it's retelling (of the past). Truly makes me envy Jane Austen for having the chance to be immersed in a similar culture. Times were vital then, unrestrained and magically dangerous in ways modern people will never know...
Without Jane's stories we could never go back, sink into that particular 19th century pocket of time and thrive fluidly with Darcy, Lizzie and the rest. So I thank her.
Gripping romance films are few and far between. Most tend to be steeped in cliches that paint false pictures of 'love' trying to oversimplify and elicit some 'moral' so much that one feels saturated watching. Must have been intimidating to do an onscreen adaptation of a classic book. I found this version surprisingly human, almost so that you feel you "own the characters" as Keira notes. You are assimilated in their struggles but not overwhelmed and forgetful of fragile elements. Though the film isn't entirely without it's 'Hollywood' influences, it's spirited and visually astounding. Quite different from the 1995 version BUT it holds its own. The fanbase can get possessive, I know, I'm willing to debate about each version but PLEASE keep it civil, both versions have their faults. The only thing that does the story 100% justice is the original work (HA) let's just agree on that, shall we?
I used the song Tomorrow Comes by David Usher because the movie is of sun rises and sun sets; every one lives to see the dawn and to live out any challenge the day may bring them. Not only that but David is insanely underrated and his music needs to be out there and I had the pleasure of seeing him live and I am still basking in the after-glow... ^^
