www.larksperennials.com I am in Wisconsin zone 4/5. I cannot afford a greenhouse so I decided to try and make a cheap hoophouse. I made this one over my raised veggie bed. I used 4' rebar for the stakes. I then took 10' , 1/2" conduit plastic pipe placed it over the rebar and hooped it over the raised bed to the other side to form a hoop. I placed the hoops about 4' apart. Then I used 4ml clear plastic over the entire hoophouse and extending it about 5' farther on each end so I could close and seal it up. I used whatever I had, boards, bricks and logs to weight it down. Total cost was about $40 - $50...depending where you shop. The only expense for the next year would probably be the plastic, $20. It has enabled me to plant 6 weeks earlier than before. Cold season crops are in and I will plant the tomatoes, peppers and herbs in about 2 weeks or less. This is one BIG experiment for me and it is FUN. Come and join my forum at www.larksperennials.com.

  • The pvc pipes are 10 feet long.

  • I am already thinking of Spring 2011. I want to make it a foot taller so I will have to get 5 foot rebar. Smiles, Lark

  • Hi , nice job on hoophouse, well i still call it a greenhouse. I made mine March of 2010 but did use less rebar and longer pvc. Darn you on;y paid 60 bucks with shipping for your plastic? I had to pay 100 but it was a huge roll of it . it has done wonders. Im in a similar zone, 5b in toronto and Ive been able to grow all sorts of tropicals and veggies in there now year round. with the assistance of a small heater. right now christmas eve it's 26 out and in the greenhouse it's 50 degrees.

  • before u buy more/longer rebar...please look into using loger pvc.cheaper and a better alternative. u should really look into doing a large hoophouse. then u can garden year round.

  • Now how long do the pipes or pvc have to be to have a 5ft height?

  • ware did you purchase de plasic??????????/

  • I knew this could be done, I just needed a smart lady to put it into action. Thanks for this video!

  • Your lucky to live where you do, my codes guy would see that and raise hell with me

  • Where in Wi are you located? I'm in Rudolph, 12 miles west of Stevens Point. Last year I built three 4'x10'x2' raised beds. They're 2 ft high because I have severe arthitis and had a back injury. I've been thinking of doing this but haven't seen anyone doing it this early yet. I have all sorts of plants started in the house. I would love to get my gardens planted. I can take some video as I do it this year.
