After the Nest of Eagles battle, when Emmy has joined, this is the place to come to to start grinding out skills and stats. It's not a very long grind, maybe 50 battles which will take around 2 or 3 hours. My starting level here is BR 08, though the first battle took me to BR 09, and I intend to go on until BR 25. After that I will spend the rest of the time doing all the sidequests before heading off to the Aquaducts and completing disc one. To get to this area just enter Blackdale and turn to the right. Go past the three spiders and two vultures and take the path to the right. You will cross the zone line into the Obsidian Trail where you will see a Skull Scavenger in front of you. There are actually two Skull Scavengers in this group and they will give you a lot of skill and stat increases from each battle. You should spend time levelling here until you get to BR 25. This is fairly straight forward and you can use 4 unions instead of three if you want to level up an extra 3 soldiers. To start with you will find that you are getting some soldiers KO'd because they don't seem to be able to take two hits off the Skull Scavengers here during the early battles. Just heal and/or revive and carry on. Not drastic if a soldier is KO'd at the end of the battle but if you've lost 2 or 3 or even more or a Leader is down then I advise you to reset and do the battle again.

  • So this is on the xbox right? Does doing this grinding method on the pc good as well? Or is doing the "pc ultimate grind" from glenys quest a better choice on the pc?

  • @bddblade AFAIK this isn't a method to use on the pc version. As to which method is good, I can't help as I've never played the pc version.

  • where do we hire soldier? not the captains units

  • @babunga

Soldiers are hired in Athlum. Speak to the soldier in the second section. All leaders can be hired from guilds but they aren't all available at the start. You need to unlock them as the game progresses.

  • I just started playing this game again after a long break. I have one question. In your written guide it says you can use 4 unions when grinding yet while demonstrating here you only use 3. Is the 4 union party suggestion for later grinding in Ancient Ruins or am I missing something? :s ...I still do three of five for now until you tell me otherwise.

  • @j800r

It is completely up to you how you want to do it. I have always preferred using fewer unions in battle but that's just a personal choice though obviously the more characters per union the higher the HP. You can only use 6 leaders at a time so I feel that two per union is good enough. It keeps the HP higher which enables the union to withstand attacks a bit better. You could use more unions and therefore level up more soldiers but it isn't necessary if you're following my guide.

  • also was kinda mad when i beat the conqueror i never got the achievment and had to do the game all over but i cant get enough of square enix so im now doin it a 3rd time aswell as FF-13

  • huge fan of square enix ive play + completed everything they have made but i only wish they made FF or last remnant online PVP that would be awesome Nice vid btw not that i needed to do it. :D

  • @FF12GM Okay thank you. Then that settles it then, the "pc ultimate grind" is the best way for the PC from what I've heard.

  • @FF12GM Lol, i'm not just following your guide. It's my bible. :P

Only issue I have is my BR raises slightly faster than yours even when I haven't fought a single enemy that's not forced. Plus the damn Skull Scavengers STILL block a lot of my attacks even at BR 20! 0.0

All's good though. I've been playing JRPGs for years so I'm a very patient person. If I'm not completely satisfied with how my party's performing I'll just restart the game. You know, I got it in '08 and STILL haven't mastered it
