Shreveport Opera Flash Mob 3-31-2011-Hand held Camera of Shreveport's 1st Flash Mob

Diners at a local restaurant were treated to a surprise opera performance tonight during the first ever flash mob held in Shreveport. The event was organized by The Community Foundation of North Louisiana and the Shreveport Opera to draw greater attention to the arts in Shreveport-Bossier in a way area locals had never experienced before.
"We were thrilled to partner with the Shreveport Opera to bring our city this exciting and fun event," said Paula Hickman, executive director of The Community Foundation. "The arts are a vital part of our city, and this was an excellent way to highlight our robust arts community to the public. It was also a wonderful way to celebrate The Foundation's 50th anniversary!"
Over 20 members of the cast and chorus of the Shreveport Opera's upcoming production of Tosca, and several local citizens broke into songs during the dining rush at an area restaurant. They treated over 100 unsuspecting guests to the Toreador song and the Gypsy song from the opera Carmen.
"We strive to have fun at the Shreveport Opera, and whether you're in jeans or a tuxedo, we want you to be part of it," said Steve Aiken, general and artistic director of the Shreveport Opera. "Shreveport Opera is all about community: where we shop, where we worship, where we play and work. We are all inclusive, and we want everyone to experience opera."
The flash mob is one of several special events The Community Foundation has planned for 2011, its 50th anniversary this year. In January, The Foundation announced the creation of a $100,000 Genius Fund to support the community, and earlier this month they announced a new, $5000 Philanthropy Film Award. In May, the Foundation will be sponsoring a performance of the Shreveport Symphony, and in August partnering to bring a new and innovative exhibit to Sci-Port. This project was supported through a grant from Harry & Nina Avant.
