The idealist would say that the world exists so long as there is a conscious mind perceiving it, i.e. even before humans fully evolved, there were still all forms of life perceiving the world... even plants perceiving the world through thermoception etc. However, never has the world existed as a physical entity.

Remember we are all made up of atoms and below that we have quantum particles that are waves of potential and probabilities. So we are all made up of that energy. The conscious mind is made up of that energy. So for the time being that energy is partially aware of itself. Not the mind but energy because you are that energy. The big bang that we all come from time did not exist until it expanded. If you know about quantum entanglement then you know we are all still connected to that energy.

It is not an illusion in our minds but an interpretation, all time and space are types of illusions though, but it does not mean it is not real if that is are there is .It is temporally real to us. If that is all there is then that is real. Also the world isn't just in someones mind the world existed long before there was anyone to comprehend it. Energy takes all possible paths all possible combinations even those without any concsious creatures to interpretate it.
