Whether you're going to Ireland or want to impress someone from the Old Sod, these words will come in handy. The trick is to master the pronunciation!

To complete this How-To you will need:

Good memory
Practice

Step 1: Say hello

Give everyone you meet a pleasant, "Dia duit!" which means, "Good day!"

Step 2: Exchange pleasantries

Respond to a greeting of "Dia duit," with "Dia is Muire duit," which means "God and Mary to you."

Step 3: Be polite

Be polite by knowing how to say please -- "le d'thoil" -- and "thank you" -- "go raibh maith agat."

Step 4: Know how to say "yes" and "no"

Know how to say "yes" -- ta -- and "no" -- nil.

Step 5: Say "Cheers!"

Know how to say "Cheers!" in a pub; the word is "Slainte!"

Tip: To add good health wishes to your toast, say: "Slainte chugat."

Step 6: Say goodbye

Bid someone farewell with "slan."

Step 7: Know where the action is

If someone mentions "craic agus ceol," put on your dancing shoes: It refers to Irish nightlife involving music.

  • There are so many things wrong here! Why would you go to the bother of making this and then uploading it when you haven't bothered to check if you're right! Step 4 is completely wrong - there is no one way of saying yes and no in Irish. "Tá" and "Níl" generally mean "there is" and "there isn't". Step 5 could hardly be pronounced more wrong. It's pronounced s-láinte, not sh-láinte. Step 6 - "ch"s in Irish are pronounced like a flemmy 'c'. The word could never be "chewgat". Can't stand ignorance.

  • I speak Irish, I dont like speaking English. People need to realize that there ARE two languages on the Island. Just because you don't speak Irish does not mean that no-one else speaks Irish. Ireland is a bilingual country. Two languages are spoken on the Island. Get your facts right and stop labeling the country as if it only had ONE language. It does not!

  • There is no one way to say "yes" and "no" in Irish Gaelic; it varies depending on the verb that was used in the question. Also, the pronunciations that are given for "Sláinte" and "Sláinte chughat" are totally wrong - there are different dialects of Irish Gaelic, but those pronunciations are wrong in EVERY dialect. The "r"s are also mispronounced in this video - the "r" sound in Irish Gaelic is not the same as in English - Just letting everyone know :)
