Mahalia shows a contemporary side when she hooks up with H.B. Barnum. This album was done in the late 60s around the same time as Clara Ward's "Soul & Inspiration." That album was also done by H.B. Barnum, and feature's Clara's version of "What The World Needs Now."

  • This album was recorded in 1968 or 69. I think it was Mahalia's last recording. Not sure why she did not record after 1969. It could be because she did not like this album, at least that is what I have heard.

  • That's what I heard too.

  • Her voice is still so clear and strong here, just like always! In her later years she could probably be more comfortable and relaxed and could really enjoy the music. Less pressure. She gained a tremendous vocal subtlety and even more control, though she had given up some of her vocal 'mountaintop' qualities, as Whitney Balliett said in The New Yorker.

  • I love Mrs Jackson I have all her song and I also sing them in church

  • I didn't like the beat or the rendition of the song. It should have soft sweet music and a clear sweet voice singing it. She jazzed it up too much. It spoiled it for me.

  • No, Ms. Jackson didn't like this album. A shame, because I think most of her fan base did. Not only did it bring her to the modern times, but there was enough on this album to let us know she hadn't abandoned traditional Gospel, either. Just listen to her earth-shattering reading of "Only What You Do For Christ Will Last". On this record, she covers everyone from Jackie DeShannon and Bert Bacharach, to Jessy Dixon and James Cleveland! Wish they would re-issue this.

  • @baconboy59 Mahalia did not do any recording after because Columbia and Mahalia fell out with each other!

  • thank you lord for blessing us w/ such great spirit, voice, and all around great woman such as ms.mahalia jackson may godbless you.... thanks for keepin her wonderful memory alive.

  • If I hadn't already know Mahalia, I wonder what I would have thought of this song? I already knew her authentic sound, so this sounds alien, but she's a fine singer still. She was outside the character of her real self here. She was requested to sing under contract, and so she sang. She did leave Columbia after this album. I think she disliked it.

  • salveBurt!

  • you know when i clicked on this i thought the intro would be just an organ and piano...like usual mahalia...but this different...i can understand why she didnt' like it all the much...she was traditional...but she fits the accompaniment. this put a smile on my face. thanks for posting.

  • Exactly (& I meant I like the M. Douglas version a lot more!) Also take (i think it's called) I Thank God from off of this album. On Give God The Glory it's a lot more powerful, better musicians too. Same for Let the Be Peace on Earth.
