Lidsters of Worksop Nottinghamshire are traditional memorial masons, and they can repeat almost any style of lettering. One of the most expensive lettering styles for an inscription is raised lead on Granite. The process requires a high level of skill, immense powers of concentration, and lots of patience. The inscription complete with guide lines has to be drawn onto a clay wash that is applied to the granite, holes are then drilled for the lead. The lead is cut and beaten into the holes, and then it is trimmed to size with a sharp chisel. The lead is rubbed smooth with fine wet and dry paper, then using the guide lines the letters are redrawn onto the lead. Using a selection of different sized and shaped chisels the letters are then cut from the lead. They are finally and carefully painted with Black paint.
