This is an in depth talk about the new controversy over how the Visuddhi Magga, which is the basis of Vipassana, was not part of the what the Buddha taught. Apparently the Abhidhamma came much later and was never even discussed by the Buddha in any of the Suttas.

Many things in it do not match what is in the Buddhist Suttas like the Majjhima Nikaya and the Samyutta Nikaya which are puported to be the original teachings and have been recited by monks since the first council of Arahants; that met after the Buddha died to ensure the teachings would be remembered correctly.

  • Why Buddha did not teach Abhidhamma to a wider audience? Here is a quote from Abhidhamma Studies by Nyanaponika p24-25: It is therefore quite probable that the Buddha transmitted the gist of his AB knowledge to such individual monks whom he knew to be capable of elaborating and applying the briefly indicated by their own penetrative intellect e.g in the case of Sariputta.

  • @dknyutube -Yes this has been debated as to why the Buddha may not have conveyed the Abhidhamma in his talks/Suttas and only given it to a few monks. However the Buddha did not appear to hold back teachings like this. He laid out dependent origination in the Suttas which is the key to Buddhism. Why would he not teach these things to his wider audience. No - ascribing it to Sariputta and not having him TEACH SARIPUTTA makes no sense. The Buddha was an open handed teacher w/nothing held back.

  • @dknyutube : Good question but it is quite complex. The process of Dependent Origination does not agree and the AB says it occurs over 3 lifetimes. The Buddha in sutta MN38 states that the 12 links are ongoing process which when clearly observed leads to the realization of Nibbana. Also the complex levels of mental states referenced in the AB are not mentioned in the Suttas. There are many differences but enough correct references to make it confusing at best.

  • @begintosee: Hi, when you mentioned AB or Abhidhamma, is that the same as Patthana: 24 Conditional Relations in Abhidharma? If so, can you explain any of the conditions in Pattana does not agree with Dependent Origination or Suttas?

  • @dknyutube : The Abhidhamma that everyone is using is the Patthana you mention. It is not what the Buddha taught and was developed by meditators and introduced at the 3rd council of monks 237 years after the Buddha. You can see what the Buddha taught in terms of Mental States in Majjhima Nikaya 38 (Dependent Origination) as well as 43,44 which deal with the Aggregates. There is more on Dependent Origination in the Samyutta Nikaya Section 12. Again Abhidhamma mean Higher training in the Suttas

  • @begintosee : Pattana (24 Conditional Relations) is vast and can be complemented in detail and thorough understanding of Dependent Origination. AB teaching could not have been come from meditators. It should be personally studied, tested the principles and see if they match with the Dhamma.

  • Hello- I believe when the Abhidhamma is mentioned in the Suttas it actually means Higher Teachings (Abhi -higher , Dhamma - teachings) It is not the abhidhamma that Bhante is discussing here. Also this is the same thing in the Vinaya if you saw it. I just finished 5/6 books of the vinaya and it is not mentioned that I ever saw. Again the Buddha said being learned in the Higher Teachings - Dependent Origination was the whole point of becoming a monk.

  • The statement "It (Abhidhamma) was only mentioned 237 years after the Buddha died," (@ 1:33) is false. The Abhidhamma is mentioned in many places within the Suttanta Pitaka, e.g. the Mahagosinga Sutta of the Majjhimanikāya.

    Being learned in the Abhidhamma is also mentioned in the Vinaya regarding the qualities of a bhikkhu suitable to grant the going forth, the higher ordination, and dependence.
