To my opinion Jose Cura has a great instrument but manages it rather poorly.
This is the aria that he sings the best though transposed 2 steps down.

  • you can hardly hear the difference between 440 and 448. Complete nonsense. The step from 434 to 448 is not even a quarter of a step. Get you facts right. This is not transposed two steps, this is normal Cura barking through a transposed score.

  • first, 434 vs 448 it's almost a quarter step.

if that wasn't so significant, then why Toscanini always insisted, while conducting operas, on the correct tuning:)

I agree, though, that Cura has barkando rather then belcanto style

  • Verdi didn't write final high note because he knew human voice very well and didn't expect a dramatic tenor to sing high c. In my opinion, it is better to sing aria in B, concentrate on acting and enjoy, than to suffer vocally and nervously.

Cura does a great job! Superb acting, characterization, smooth line, vocal acting and great high notes (two glorious high B's, great overtones, sung with ease)!!!!

  • Kamertone was tuned back them at A=434, now is 440 and some European places like Austria is 448, which makes this aria if sung at 448 ending at C#, so the real key today should be B.

I'd disagree that Verdi knew voices, like any genious he wrote and hoped that voices emerge slowly, as we today know as Verdian voices.

But Verdi himself was called, in his own time, distroyer of the belcanto voices.

as for Cura:) Great voice, good presence, nice looking, but lacks technique, natural talent I'd s

  • UNTRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cura sings this aria in B major, which is a half step down from the original C major.

    And he sings it EXTRAORDINARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • tune your piano, it's definatly hafl step down

  • bel timbro, ma dovrebbe imparare a cantare!

  • This is not bad. Cura is a great actor, has a perfect body but sings somtimes in a vocal manner that makes me a little bit tired to listen to.

If you like to hear a perfect "di quella pira", listen to Jussi Björling in original C-dur key.

    Never getting tired of that.

  • Wenn du singst eine c in eine große Bühne, du darf sagen: das ist slecht...bisbald...

  • Cura from what I have heard from him can only sing high notes

in the ''OH'' vowel. He does not sing ''Alaaaaaaaaaaar miiiiii'' he sing

    ''AlOOHMIOOOH''.

    Not impressed by his singing.

  • @chupszg Nomally I like Cura for his strength, his powerful beautiful voice. But in this specific aria (or in this specific edition) I think he is to careless with his technique. Listen to the same aria sung by Pavarotti.

  • @chupszg Cura did sing it well in B major and so could millions of other tenors and baritones and look at most of his other works. They are inferior. No offense to Cura's fans.

  • LE NOTE RIBATTUTE SONO UN OPZIONAL????

  • BRAVA!!!!!!

  • Cessare. I like the video, but its NOT one of the best performance of this Aria by Cura. I saw it live in concert in he reach the C major. The thing is that whit his great formation, he likes, as Callas did, go deep in the lyrics an characters of the play, and dont like to play the same aria the same way as if it was a DVD. Thats way he is so great LIVE and in records. Theres a few interviews of him in Youtube were he explain this. Ppl can like it or not, but he really got talent and formation.
