Yes you are correct they are part of the pioneers of San Francisco Psychedelic music, though I would call the scene more Folk and Blues and less country

Tommy Hall (lyricist) was an existentialist and well read. I see this song as possibly his response to much of what was coming out of the Beat/Hippie philosophy at the time i.e. Neal Cassady could be Dr. Doom and "read your recent letter" could be one of the letters to Jack Kerouac which had great impact on the movement. Just a thought :)

when I get my cover band together and we do our world tour, this song will be our opener for every show.
when this tour earns enough money, I'll buy a time machine and go back and see
these guys perform this live.
