I always found it interesting that the Mayan date 12/21/12 fell exactly in between the day we vote for president and the day that president takes office...

Has anybody stopped and thought that the Mayans just stopped? They probably could not be bothered carrying on with the prophecies or noticed that knowing future events is a huge power that could corrupt them. The calender stops on the 21st December 2012, the calender had to end at a certain date as it can't go on forever so don't make a huge fuss over it, its most likely they stopped for whatever reason.
