The Sound of Tarmac

The Sound of Tarmac in the sun..the smell of tar
After all is said and done...mine is to be a lonely star
Without much twinkle in the sky..

...perhaps..perhaps
I need a brighter torch...maybe a faster run..but
When I read the list of things..I see that I am never one
They win the prizes ...they are the ones that beat the drum.

...and who are they you ask ? Well...
They are still them my friend...each and every one
...each other's chums.

The scribbles of a woman's thoughts are lost again...again...
My thoughts...they nervously rise up...I let them out...
Like little bats they dart about the night...
Then they are gone..

Oh yes..I 'm blasted by applause...but it is not for me...
Singing as loudly as I can it falls on deafened ears
...leaving me
A hermit soul..a wanderer in dust..
...just walking on...and walking on...because I feel I must...

Words are filling up my brain ..,a tempest in my mind
I release them ..let them go...
And anxiously they flutter on the wind...forlorn unheard
The things I say are not the things they want to hear
And that's my thorny crown I have to wear...

Unless ...unless I change my name and gear
And change my sex and change my ways...
...and shave my head and shout my name
And beat and fight and kick and shove and shave
Unless I do these things and do them well..
My silence will remain...

The sound of Tarmac in the sun...the smell of tar..
And after all is said and done mine is to be a lonely star
Without much twinkle in the sky.

(Thanks for putting this out again via bulletin. I can't believe I didn't see this one before--I usually come by when you upload. Alas....) Thoughts like little bats...then they are gone. One of many great images and phrases that shine here, whether or not there is much "twinkle in the sky." Great, Kristine, as always.
