No matter what it is—cigarettes, trans fat, incandescent light bulbs—chances are some nanny wants to ban it. And this past month was no exception.

Last month, the top prize for biggest buttinsky went to the Alabama state Supreme Court, for upholding a ban on sex toys and devices specifically designed to stimulate human genitals. Because, well, you know, the government really does have a right to regulate your most private parts. Learn more at http://reason.tv/video/show/nanny-state-september-2009

Who is the Nanny of the Month for October 2009? The runners up include:

The Fairfax County, Virginia police for arresting Eric Williamson after a woman saw him making coffee naked—in his own home.

Then there's the Los Angeles City Council, which extended its ban on new fast food restaurants in South LA.

But there's only one Nanny of the Month, and this time it's...

  • I am starting to think 'land of the free' is false advertisement.

  • Talk about stupidity. Good thing I always shower fully clothed. Wouldn't want the police to arrest me for being naked in my own home.

  • Was Mr. Monk behind this? (Lee Goldberg, MR. MONK AND THE BAD COP.)

  • He's a Democrat. It doesn't suprise me.

  • Aye and it was for banning sex toys and most liberals agree that what happens in the bedroom is not the state's business.

  • Well I'm sure glad someone in the government is doing something about this potentially lethal practice and earning the money power and prestige of his position. :)

  • The worst part is that there are about a dozen (conservatively) nannies of the month, and yet there is only time to lambast one of them...

And though Reason TV manages to make the segments poignant and amusing, should any of us bring these up day-to-day, then everyone will think we're weirdos.

  • fuck the nanny state.

  • what the Hell was that?

  • That's not true, unfortunately. Last months winner was the Alabama Supreme Court.

  • They criminalized efficient refrigerants under a scientific hoax of "Ozone Holes", so the lower efficiency stuff wastes fuel & adds to pollution. They criminalized DDT, so poor nations suffer millions of slow torturous deaths from bug-borne diseases every year. They criminalized forest management, so fires are unstoppable & destroy much more of nature & property, and kill more, and pollute vastly more. A town in Washington recently criminalized soap; VIDEO: "Criminalizing Soap".
