Building a Rain Barrel
Materials:
*purchase/obtain a rain barrel (free to $40) We purchased ours at our local hardware store for $20
*a faucet with a threaded connector on the back
*2 "O" Rings
*screen
*zip ties or any tying method to tie screen to the barrel for screening
*drill
*a saw (if the barrel has a top)
*blocks/stepping stones
*pliers
1 remove the top of the barrel with a saw if the barrel has a top
2 rinse/clean the inside of the barrel well
3 have someone straddle the barrel and drill a whole (same size as thread of faucet purchased) about 2 inches from the bottom of the barrel
4 place 1 "O" ring on the faucet and insert faucet in the whole so the "O" ring is flushed against the barrel.
5 Crawl inside the barrel, place the "O" ring on the back of the faucet, and tape it with some plumbing thread tape
6 Screw the connector on the faucet hand tight
7 Use Pliers to tighten a little more, but DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN or the faucet will leak at the barrel.
8 Fill with water to the line of the faucet to test leakage. If everything is good, place the barrel under your gutter drain.
