Protesting Greenpeace's Mt. Rushmore Protest

*Disclaimer: I completely support the environment, and would be happy to support another, less obnoxious environmental non-profit. Additionally, this video should in no way suggest an endorsement of any political party or policy. It's simply meant to poke fun at one foolish act by a single organization.

UPDATE (7/10): From the Associated Press: "The activists intentionally damaged part of the memorial's security system and were able to delay rangers' response to the demonstration Wednesday, said Nav Singh, a spokesman for the Mount Rushmore National Memorial."

Therefore, this was NOT a peaceful protest. An example of a peaceful protest would have been organizing a march or a demonstration in DC, NOT an illegal act involving trespassing and tinkering with security systems.



The text in the video pretty much says it all. Greenpeace illegally climbed Mt. Rushmore and draped a banner on it to raise awareness for global warming. Yes, I support Greenpeace's mission, but really? Was this necessary?

From Greenpeace.org: "After successfully deploying a banner 65 feet tall by 35 feet wide, our climbers have come down and have been taken into custody by authorities. But they got our message out loud and clear."

...I fail to see how defacing a national memorial - which people travel many miles to see - is a success, but bravo to Greenpeace, who today certainly got one "message out loud and clear": that they are willing to go to ridiculous, stupid and dangerous lengths to further a worthy cause that could be just as easily promoted in any number of ways that don't make them look like a**holes.

Once again, this was SATIRE. Also, they didn't take it with them when they left, since they "left" in police custody, having been arrested for trespassing and tinkering with the security systems in place. I didn't miss the point at all, I sympathize with their point, but not with their method of making it.

I completely agree that global warming is one of the most important issues we face. This video is simply meant to be satire on the method Greenpeace chose to promote this cause. I sympathize with the cause, just not using illegal means to promote it. I think there are more productive ways of raising awareness for global warming.

I think I heard about this but when I see this I get sick to the stomach. I was mad when they did this to the House of Commons in Ottawa now this flaky freak from Belgium repels down the Calgary Tower defacing the landmark with a sign "Separate Oil from State". I don't like my landmarks being defaced and I don't like talked down to by people who don't even lift a finger to make an honest living
