A soviet jet bomber Tu-16 commanded by A.Pliyev crashed into the Norwegian Sea on May 25 1968 after a low pass by aircraftcarrier USS Essex. Notice the Tu-16 flying by the USS Essex just 15 meters above the sea. At the end it's possible to see a second Tu-16 flying around trying to find out what happened to the other plane. Footage from The National Archives in Washington.

  • In Cold War both sides were doing provocative actions. This is what sucks about Cold War, people were dying due to politicians playing stupid games.

  • Let me add to: oldfrend.. (spell much?)...Soviets manufactured top line military hardware.. much of it 'knock offs' of our technology. I probably hate "Soviet society" and Communism more than you, but, THIS 'incident' had NOTHING to do with 'faulty' hardware.. simply POOR piloting .. I am a retired Naval Aviator/Commercial Pilot, with 33,000+ hours.. AND I was there! It is a "NO NO" to dip a wing into the drink ---and kill your crew!!

  • american worldwide terrorists shot down our plane. summon SS-27

  • If you are going to intimidate your enemy, best not to crash while doing a flyby. roflmao!!

  • all i understand is "stupid sod" at 0:36 xD

  • And this as other typical incident from this time... but this footage stay a piece of History. Btw, does someone here know were can I find this famous shot of a B-52 making a low pass by the left of an U.S aircraft carrier ?

  • Well that what you get for trying to mess with America, we are so powerfull we can think crash, and the next thing you know bam! one Tu-16 at the bottom of the Norwegian sea

  • -.- i dont understand the language -.-

  • Cont. 3

BTW . . .There was NO "2nd Badger"!! I would stake my life on that. Someone spliced this film to phoney it up. We were airborne until we were about to run out of gas, because they couldn’t launch anyone else. While this was the first “airshow” the Soviets gave us, this “overflying” was a daily occurrence for us (sometimes Bears.. other times Badgers) on the boat during this phase of the Cold War.
