Acetylene (IUPAC name: Ethyne) is produced by filling a balloon with several chunks of calcium carbide, stretching the balloon over the lip of a flask filled with water and then tipping over the balloon filling it with acetylene. This experiment should not be done without an expertise in chemistry, and proper safety equipment such as ear protection and safety goggles or a face shield.

  • Nice! I't would be awesome to pump some oxygen into the balloon!!

  • @elementguy27 it qould have been very cool but then there would be the loss of soot, the possible deafness or people passing by and damage to that truck that drove by in the last clip. Once I have a place to do this stuff I'll do an oxy-acetylene balloon.

  • May be you find another place for such experiments. The car passed just one or two seconds before the combustion.

  • @DoktorKlawonn I totally agree.

  • Nice fire ball!

How is the setup for igniting the balloon?

is it only a tissue paper taped on balloon

  • @kuro96inlaila yes it's simply i piece of tissue taped to the balloon. cheap and effective

  • I watched a guy put acetylene and oxygen in a mole tunnel...he lit it and expected just a small 'poof' or something. Let's just say he never did that again, nor does he (or I) recommend anyone do that for mole removal. It's great for perforating ear drums though, - you know, if you're into perforating your ear drums with loud noises. and such. Just sayin'.

  • @DoktorKlawonn

    I agree
