Ram pumps use a flow of water to pump a fraction of that water to a higher level than the source.

This ram pump was constructed using two surplus non-return valves. One non-return valve has the spring replaced with weights and forms the 'clack' valve. The other prevents backward flow of water in the outlet pipe.

The red pressure accumulator is not a necessary part and is only there to iron out the spikes in outlet pressure. (The accumulator is filled with chunks of closed cell foam to prevent air being lost into the water through dissolution - this also means that the accumulator can work in any orientation)

Pump works on approx 3 ft head, pumping to over 6 ft.

  • can you post a video on how to make one?

  • Um. No!

But there is lots of information out there on how they are constructed if you want to have a go! :-)

  • do these pumps lose more water than the water being pumped?

  • Yes they do. Energy is taken from a large flow (by stopping it suddenly) and using the pressure spike to pump a small amount of water to a greater height.

  • wat do u use it for?

  • Currently I do not use it for any particular purpose. The reason for building it was for fun only. However, there are many who live in remote areas who use it for supplying their water from a low level. They are particularly reliable pumps and can work for many years without maintenance.

    :-)

  • I hydraulic rammed yo mamma

  • @ElitePokerPlayer the equation for homemade pumps is around 2/3 used for energy while the other 1/3 is send into the outlet hose. 33 percent efficiency.

  • interesting to say

  • @prymus420

The pump is using a spring-loaded check valve. The size appears to be 1". The valve most similar to the one in the video is Lowe's SKU 187372, although any rough brass spring-loaded check valve would work as well.

  • Thanks! One of the better smaller ones I've seen for sure! Any chance you could point me in the right direction as far as the waste valve you used? I've been searching for one just like it but can't seem to find one.

  • wasting lots of water dude...
