In its simplist form it is playing with the back of a fingernail with a downstroke intead of an upstroke. The thumb stays on the fifth string and plays the "and" of a "1-2 and" beat. While there can be a plethora of individual styles within any style the basic style is the same. You may hear someone refer to drop-thumb or double thumbing, but those are still wihin the frailing style. Nevertheless Steve Martin didn't invent it. I do give kudos for learning the style quite effectively. .

Frailing and Clawhammer are technically the same style. I believe it was Pete Seeger who coined the term clawhammer. Before it was referred to by many different names, but frailing seemed to be the most common.

@nancejo I think he might have been referring to the way Martin integrates the frailing and clawhammer styles. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Steve's the man...amd also as far as I know the only person tho win Grammy awards for both comedy and music...

@mahthah - Sorry to bust your bubble, but Steve did not invent frailing. It goes back to Africa and is probably hundreds of years old.

Woohoo! way to go Steve! I love it!
Steve Martin seems to be a true Renaissance Man. He's a comedian, an actor, an author, a musician, and the acknowledged creator of his particular method of banjo playing. Is there anything this man can't do, and do well??? (Besides bear a child, I mean. LOL )
