In its simplist form it is playing with the back of a fingernail with a downstroke intead of an upstroke. The thumb stays on the fifth string and plays the "and" of a "1-2 and" beat. While there can be a plethora of individual styles within any style the basic style is the same. You may hear someone refer to drop-thumb or double thumbing, but those are still wihin the frailing style. Nevertheless Steve Martin didn't invent it. I do give kudos for learning the style quite effectively. .

Damn that's good! He's so talented at acting, comedy, and now music. I'm a fan of traditional blue grass like this. I think today's country music is losing its identity because it's getting too far away from its roots.
