The Clambake Seven was actually TD's dixieland answer to Benny Goodman's trio & quartet. ;)
Boogie with a taste of dixie - or vice versa. ;) Dave Tough is absolutely AMAZING here!!!!!!
The personnel for this April 15, 1937 session are:
Tommy Dorsey - trombone
Pee Wee Irwin - trumpet
Johnny Mince - clarinet
Bud Freeman - tenor sax
Carmen Mastren - guitar
Harold Smith - piano
Gene Traxler - bass
Dave Tough - drums
Dig.....
Maybe Vinylelvis1 is thinking of "Caravan." Agree wholeheartedly about Tough being a great drummer. Interesting that he was a fan of Roach.

This tune was composed by Raymond Scott in 1937.

Tough was a big fan of Max Roach too. He loved bop...totally a hip cat.

Cool comments. Dave Tough deserves a major biography or even a documentary. He was that important and hip.

Woops, my bad, this is a Raymond Scott tune. Didn't realize it until checking by RS CDs.

This also sounds like TD was listening to a bit of the Raymond Scott Quintet at the time. BTW Raymond Scott's drummer was composer John Williams' father Johnny Williams Sr.

RE: Davey Tough, I totally agree with you. Probably the most under rated drummer of his day and most forward thinking. The only member of Chicago's "Austin High School gang" that could have bridged the gap between swing and bop had he lived to do it. We lost him way to early.

Mark i enjoyed this Dixieland Boogie crossover! Love the trombones, and the drums hold it together nicely! Part of the song reminds me of another tune...not sure which one though....great recording!
