Whistle Stop is a 1946 movie starring George Raft and Ava Gardner. The film was shot in black and white and in the film noir style. The movie was directed by Léonide Moguy and based on a novel by Maritta M. Wolff. The screenplay is by Philip Yordan and the musical score is by Dimitri Tiomkin.

Away for two years, a woman named Mary returns home. She attempts to reconcile with Kenny Veech, her former romantic interest, but he is jealous and bitter, particularly after she takes up with Veech's moral enemy, nightclub owner Lew Lentz.

Veech and an accomplice, Gitlo, hatch a scheme to rob and kill Lentz at a train station as he leaves for Detroit, then hide his corpse to make Mary believe he chose not to return. Mary manages to foil Veech's plans, but she remains torn between the two men.

Seeking vengeance, Lentz tries to pin a murder on Veech and Gitlo, who barely make a getaway. Veech and Lentz end up killing one another, leaving Mary alone.

George Raft (September 26, 1901 -- November 24, 1980) was an American film actor and dancer identified with portrayals of gangsters in crime melodramas (mob films) of the 1930s and 1940s. A stylish leading man in dozens of movies, today George Raft is mostly known for his gangster roles in Billy Wilder's 1959 comedy Some Like it Hot, the original Scarface (1932), and Each Dawn I Die (1939), and as a dancer in Bolero (1934) and a truck driver in They Drive by Night (1940). Raft's actual association with gangsters as a "wheel man" (getaway driver) in New York prior to his film career gave his iconic image an added verisimilitude.

Ava Lavinia Gardner (December 24, 1922 -- January 25, 1990) was an American actress.

She was signed to a contract by MGM Studios in 1941 and appeared in small roles until she drew attention with her performance in The Killers (1946). She became one of Hollywood's leading actresses, considered one of the most beautiful women of her day. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her work in Mogambo (1953).

She appeared in several high-profile films from the 1950s to 1970s, including Bhowani Junction (1956), On the Beach (1959), The Night of the Iguana (1964), Earthquake (1974), and The Cassandra Crossing (1976). Gardner continued to act regularly until 1986, four years before her death from pneumonia, at age 67, in 1990.

She is listed 25th among the American Film Institute's Greatest female stars.

Victor Andrew de Bier Everleigh McLaglen (10 December 1886 -- 7 November 1959) was an English boxer and World War I veteran who became a successful film actor. Towards the end of his life he was naturalised as a U.S. citizen.

Tom Conway (15 September 1904 -- 22 April 1967) was a British film and radio actor, and the older brother of actor George Sanders.
