I did a bit of research. This is apparently the ANOTHER fake Thanatos. Hence the weakned ability on Dark Force. X:
They took Thanatos while he was still a bad guy. -w-

Well that's probably cause you have to fight Lloyd and Colette beforehand. So they wanted to cut you some slack.
Storyline wise, he has no excuse though..... They should've made him a boss near the ending instead...

Yeah, I believe they're possessed by Thanatos. They join right after these two battles.
