Scientists have confirmed that 65.5 million years ago, a meteor at least 10 km (6 mi) in diameter collided with the Earth. This particular meteor impacted on or near the Yucatan Peninsula and created the Chicxulub Crater. This event is likely not solely responsible for a mass extinction of animal and plant species at the time, but caused major damage and wiped out most of anything within a several hundred kilometre radius.
