A young but deceptively talented Illinois team nearly ruined Penn State's Homecoming weekend behind a sound defense, solid kicking, and a running game led by then-sophomore tailback Rashard Mendenhall. Like a lot of victories from the 2006 season, the defense had to bail out an anemic offense that only managed one TD the entire game.

@Baldgol4 5-7 season is not going to happen. The defense is just too good for that. Although Penn State just might lose to Illinois.

2011 Penn State will lose to Illinois and six others.

@muzapstar Well, to be fair, the defense wasn't quite the same, which is part of why they declined in quality in 2006. The offense in 2005 was good, but not world class, either, it was the defense that made the difference. The 2006 Lions still were a pretty solid team, and except for that Notre Dame game, were in every game they lost until the end. But kind of like how Illinois lost this more than we won it, we lost the Ohio State game more than the Buckeyes won it.

@NittanyNation22 Illinois had the same record that year as in 2005 oddly enough, but it was more from misfortune than actually sucking. The Illini outplayed not only Penn State but also Ohio State (a team they lost 17-10 to) and Wisconsin (30-24 loss, led 24-10 at halftime). That progress became apparent in 2007 when they finished 9-3 and went to the Rose Bowl. Their only bad loss in 06 was a 33-0 shellacking by Rutgers (who was actually a great team that year)..

@MVillani1985 Illinois lost that game more than we won it I think. Granted we came up with some big plays at crucial times but Mendenhall was getting 10 yards a pop.

Crazy that this team had basically the same offense except morelli instead of M. Rob. and was so much worse.

I'm not one to often admit that a PSU win was closer than the score, but this one certainly was. Illinois was in the game until the waning seconds ticked away.
