@nesgael1 if it was necessary, it would be on every vw model that happens to have one. however, it's not. secondary air pump is not necessary.

The secondary air pump is not unnecessary. on a cold start it adds oxygen from air to the exhaust causing the oxygen sensor to compensate by adding fuel which heats up the catalytic converter quickly. You would probably buy a new converter every year without this innovation.Your air pump also reduces the dispersal of excess hydrocarbons during specific drive cycle occasions.

how long does it take to fix?

If you are talking about how long it takes for the check engine light to turn off after re-attaching a hose that fell off or what not, you either have to just drive for a good week and hopefully it will check and see that its fixed and turn off the light, or you can use special tools to reset the cars computer and the light will go off, and eventually the car will test again to see if its fixed or not
