About 40% of Japanese adult males smoke. Compare this with America's 20%.

The new taxes should put a dent in that number, but probably not much. I've heard a few Japanese men say that they will quit when it becomes more expensive, but it's not hard to find a smoker that says he will quit.

The upcoming taxes on smokes have cause a 20% increase in tobacco sales this month.

  • like i said, i don't smoke so i have no clue what they cost now but i worked in a store that sold them 10 years ago and they were over $6 then. so still way cheaper in japan....

i heard that prices rarely go up over there. very minimal inflation. true?

  • @kmah88 A little over 12 years ago I also worked in a store that sold smokes. I remember "Canyon Reds" (the ultra discount cigarettes) sold for $1.08. Now that was cheap!! Of course it was probably more cardboard than tobacco, but...
