Last mile ISP's should not be in the business of content distribution. The Comcast CDN (Cable TV, VoD, VoIP) should be forcibly split apart from the Comcast Network. Once this has happened, the Comcast Network can charge equal access fees to all CDN's - including the Comcast CDN, Level 3, Akamai, etc. In the meantime, last mile networks need to fall under the same service-level requirements as water and electricity, particularly for mission-critical services like tele-health and security .
Have to agree with the below comment about syncing not being a big deal and having downloading is easy. I plug my iPod Classic in every night to get the latest group of podcasts for the day. If I had the room on my Android (16g v 160g on iPod classic) I could now use over the air syncing. How would I do that with an iPhone? Oh, right!
The argument about local storage vs streaming missed an existing solution, local caching. I tend to agree that the average 15-year old will expect to be able to gain access to media anytime/anywhere, but this doesn't preclude the use of local caching and security to make this efficient.
I was surprised that nobody mentiond how TiVo has been efficiently downloading NetFlix, Amazon and Blockbuster videos while still maintaining rental policies. This model should be able to fit efficiently into handheld devices and will be much more efficient than streaming the same content over and over again each time a user wants to view a rental. This use of streaming on demand is a crude way of managing content control and is unnecessary (as TiVo clearly demonstrates).
I usually preffer downloading vs streaming, because while I painfully wait for the first download, for the second download it happens on the background. -- So the point is that the time I spend watching, is equal to the time invested downloading and that's the ideal cycle. After I watch it, I can just delete it.
So I am still for downloading vs streaming. Also the choice of better quality offset the decision.
Here is an idea, go to yahoo music, and talk about whoever is on the cover page. I also think the book demographic is different from the music demographic. They always talk about kids as driver of technology because of music. But I dont think kids buy most of the books sold. So what about talking the 'book driver' demographic in tech.
if just Gillmor realize he is not a parameter for music. He should stick to tech, and even tech, stick to apple stuff. Between his fixation to Apple's ipad and Microsoft Silverflunk, they keep a revolving door.
