Quick time lapsed video of a speedpainting I did today. Definitely not my best work, but still worth uploading.

Actual painting time: 1 hour
You can view the final painting here: http://andantonius.deviantart.com/art/Fetid-Jungle-154405362

The process should be fairly self explanatory. Just laying down large chunks of color to start, then scribbling in shapes until an image starts to appear, flipping the canvas every so often to check for mistakes. Then just a matter of gradually refining the individual elements.

Getting the camera angle was a pain in the butt. I ended up sticking my desk lamp to the left of the cintiq and hung my webcam at the end of it, haha.

The glove I'm wearing is a smudgeguard. It's useful for keeping the tablet from getting dirty and allows the hand to glide freely across the tablet's surface. Check them out at www.smudgeguard.com

  • Did you get this tablet for fun, or are you working on becoming an artist? I'd like to save up and buy this model rather than the 24, but I don't have any experience with drawing tablets. I really like the control of traditional media like pencil and paper, but I'm more than willing to give this a shot.

  • @kevin71127 I'm currently a student and working artist, so it's definitely a tool of the trade at this point. If you've never used tablets or digitally painted before, I'd recommend starting off with a bamboo or intuos, Cintiqs are a big investment to get only to find out you don't like digital artwork, starting smaller is much easier to handle financially and it's not that much different from a Cintiq and you can decide if its something you want to pursue or not.

  • @Andantonius between this and the intuos4 large, which is flat out better for drawing?

  • @kevin71127 Neither are "better" really, I'd say the Cintiq is 10-20% faster and easier for certain tasks and it's more fun to use, but they're both equally good for drawing, painting and anything else digital. If this is your first time getting in to digital art, I'd definitely recommend starting with the intuos.

  • how is it in terms of distance from the actual pen nib and the ACTUAL screen not the glass over it, as i know the cintiq 12wx has quite a gap which i really am not a fan of, having the nib as close as screen to the nib is what i want...

  • @faenor I've never had a problem with the nib being too far from the screen; you have to re-calbirate it every now and then but it's never been an issue for me.

  • Anyone know the name of the song in the background? Must have!

  • Thank you for your answer! Do you work as an illustrator?

  • @QHealer Thanks very much! :)

And the Cintiq comes with Photoshop Elements and Painter Essentials which are basically watered down versions of the full versions of both programs, but I typically use a full version of Painter 12 to do most of my work. Photoshop Elements is more than enough to create professional quality digital art though, how you use the program is more important than the program itself.

  • @clwGaming There are a lot of tutorials online to help get you started on places like conceptart, gnomon workshop, deviantart (sometimes), and other places. The most important thing is to practice and find someone more skilled than you that can help you get started. :)
