Jamesy any Irish person who came to the UK were legally able to do so. The first big influx of Irish immigrants happened as a result of the potato famine. At this time Ireland was a part of Britain and the people were free to move to any part they so chose. Now if an Irish person comes here they are allowed to do so under EU law and we can go there as well if we wish.

Also under EU law anyone from a member state is free to travel and work anywhere in europe. If the jobs dried up here
