Great performance, probably too good, I think it damaged his career. Never really got any starring roles after this. Unfortunately he always had an aura of 'weakness' and 'victim' especially after those russian roulette scenes, even though most ordinary people would pobably have been like that. De Niro was the hero, Walken the 'interesting' one and Savage the pityful one. Not good for your career.

Interesting that his father was actually in Guadalcanal, and a generation later he would appear in a film about that same battle (Thin Red Line).

They don't make films like this anymore. At all. The pacing, the realism. It just rarely if ever happens.

is one of his best performance.
I don't know what it is about John Savage, but I just love watching him. I've been his fan for over twenty years. I just love his New York accent in this film. Thank you for posting this interview.

@Boncokbec John's a very under rated actor without question. There's something very human about his performances.
