Audio Technica 835b versus the Sennheiser MKH 416 both plugged into a zoom H4n via XLR. The mic was about 6" away or so. Can you hear the difference? Is it worth the price difference(750$)? PLEASE excuse the mic handling noise as I had to hold both mics with my bare hands! Also see the audio of the female coming up shortly.

  • @ChatBlancAudio Both mics were on a boom pole, and in a non-treated room. In terms of off axis rejection, you are right I did not take that into account. There are plenty of tests out there for that. But for videographers on a budget I think that this shows that in a controlled situation you can get excellent sound for an excellent price. Especially useful if you are doing narrations and voiceovers you do not need to spend $1000 to achieve good sound.

  • These are both shotgun mics, so testing them a few inches from the sound source in a quiet room isn't really testing what they were designed for. Set them up on a boom or stand in a location with background & off-axis noise (busy park? busy office? city street?) & place the sound source (even if it's you) several feet from the mic. That's where their performance matters. Oh, and yes, youtube destroys the quality of the file at 240p so either post it HD or post links to the raw wav files.

  • @aldave Hey really, can you tell us what you think. Also I'm going to try to put the raw mp3 link because I think youtube is lowering the quality a bit.

  • I cant tell a difference.

  • I am now thinking youtube has compressed the audiofile too much
