this dry laid stone sculpture was made by nathan peterson as part of his final thesis in sculpture at umass. it's next to the durfee conservatory, a later edition of the original greenhouse from the mass. ag. college. it is about 6 feet tall...he also designed the stone apron surrounding it. the bluestone came from the umass stone "boneyard", where it was stashed back in the 70's, only a few weeks after the campus center building was opened. designed by the famous architect MARCEL BREUER, he used the bluestone as the rooftop plaza surface. the stone could not withstand the weight of vehicles, so it had to be replaced by precast concrete tiles.

This could only be improved by building it over a reservoir and feeding water up a rigid pipe in the centre to cascade over the feature. Would look awesome lit up.
