Gregory Porter is giving fans of jazz singing a reason to look forward to the coming years. His debut album, "Water", was nominated for a Grammy and it introduced us to a male jazz singer with the kind of chops to dominate the category. For several years now, Kurt Elling has been the pre-eminent male in jazz singing. With the release of Water, Porter has served notice that Elling now has some company.

  • Why comparing him to Kurt Elling, or anyone else? Both are great, why can't you enjoy both without asking yourself some stupid questions?

  • @ElboLeto I'm sure you misunderstood my comment. I never compared Porter to Elling or anyone else. I simply said that Elling has been the pre-eminent male in jazz singing and that he now has some company. That statement wasn't about comparing the two singers but it was about saying that Elling now has another guy out there that can share the top spot with him. And that is good for fans of jazz and jazz singing like myself. So I don't see where I asked myself and questions, stupid or otherwise.

  • This guy is great, has a wonderful tone and feel. Timing is cool. My Momma who was a big Joe Williams fan would dig this. I 'll turn it up so Momma can hear from Heaven. Thanks for this post God Bless

  • @nazzerite I'm sure your mom would've loved listening to this guy if she was a big fan of Joe Williams. I'm a huge fan of Mr. Williams myself. Your mother was obviously a woman of fine tastes.

  • put this singer as equal to kurt elling kevin mahogany or mark murphy is like say that a diamond is just a rock ...

  • @civilleraphael This guy has the talent to be compared to Elling, Mahogany and Murphy. He has the kind of voice that can sing with any of those guys on their best days. He can also scat very well and he writes some nice lyrics [like this tune and quite a few others on his album]. Elling himself said that this guy is someone to lookout for. Check out some of his other clips here on YouTube. In one of them, he does a great job with Elling's "Orange Blossoms In Summertime". This guy is for real.

  • Mr Porter should be commended for keeping the art form intact...(the second album "Be Good" is just as important)... his no "none sense" approach places him in a class all alone...please keep this intergrity and keep commercialism OUT!!!!!!!!

  • this song performed live = unbelievable. vibes for days lol

  • heureusement il existe encore d'excellents chanteurs de blues

  • This song is "HOT". It reminds me of a time long forgotten. It also reminds me of the late great Gill Scott Heron.

  • Class! Thank you Mr. Porter!

  • i recently saw mr. scruff live doing a DJ set, he played this song, it was great.

  • Made me realise how much I love jazz again!

  • Fine Jazz and better than the Opolopo's remix, hence, this is the "music-coup-de-coeur" in my selection today, best

  • @themisspalmer92 Yes - we were there too! He was awesome!!

  • Just saw him singing over this record at Another Sunday Afternoon at Dingwalls (with Gilles Peterson & Patrick Forge) today in London. He blew the house down….with the crowd chanting ‘…ain’t no need for sunlight...’. Totally wicked and would love to see more of him.

  • favolosoooooooooo.....

  • 1960 What?? Jazz at it's finest!

  • What goes round comes round #ocupywallstreet #occupyeverywhere

  • Heard this guy just last night on radio 2! I was stuck in my van driving home in the rain and then I heard this....AWESOME! I don't know that much about Jazz, but this guy & his band, well just listen and you'll know what I mean!!

  • Fantastic

  • Where has this man been hiding - or is it just me? Fresh voice ( love the shouting in his voice), great arrangement which just grows. He will certainly be part of my hit list. Why is there so little of his material available?

  • Well it sure is good that there is one real singer, writer who loves Jazz and sings in tune..
