It's our first full day back in Seattle after living out-of-state for over a year. We are taking over daily operations of Schooner LAVENGRO, a 1926 Biloxi Bay schooner built by Jack Covacevich, modeled after the other shrimping schooners he built in Mississippi throughout the 20's. Currently she's at the Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle, but we will be taking her around Puget Sound often, and living aboard whenever we leave Lake Union. Curtis has been sailing small race boats for much of his life, and grew up around Puget Sound. I also grew up next to Puget Sound, and have been working in maritime since the mid 90's. We love traditional boats and can't wait to help Lavengro along, with her classic workboat style, to becoming more known in the Sound. Our goals are to bring combined art and sailing programs to ALL kids in the area, to get visitors and residents on the water, and involved in maritime culture, and to establish great relationships with the other vessels and ports.

Right off the bat we have to inventory and organize below decks, think about installing the stove and maybe lowering the topmast, installing new shrouds, and getting the port side ribs replaced.

If you are interested in volunteering, please email me at kim@jacktarmagazine.com. It's the same email if you are interested in making a tax deductible donation, earmarked for LAVENGRO, to the Northwest Schooner Society, or if you have any boat or art supplies that we could use.

Stay tuned for more LAVENGRO!
